Hon. Chris Fearne is the Deputy Prime Minister of Malta and the Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection.
Between 2016 and 2024 he served as the Minister for Health for three consecutive legislatures. Chris Fearne has been a Member of Parliament for the ruling Labour Party since 2013. In 2017 he was elected as the Labour Party’s Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs. He is the Leader of the House of Parliament and Chairs the House Business Committee and the National Audit Office Parliamentary Committee. Prior to becoming Leader of the House, he served as the Chairperson of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee. DPM Fearne is also the Vice-Chair of the Quadripartite One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. In May 2023 he was elected President of the 76th World Health Assembly.
Before entering the political arena, DPM Fearne worked as a doctor and paediatric surgeon for over 30 years, during which time he held the position of Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Clinical Chairperson for Surgery at Mater Dei Hospital. He received his formal education at the University of Malta graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1987, becoming a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, following which he worked and studied in a number of children’s hospitals in England, including Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. He also lectured students of medicine at the University of Malta.
